Handling
This species is a good choice for children of all ages, they are easy to handle because they are super small. Their small size also makes them adorable and cute.
As they are larger, our biologists have developed a technique for each species to handle them ethically. Whether it's a basket or a blanket, everything is designed to ensure their comfort during the activity.
Description
This mammal comes from South America (Andes Cordiere so Chile, Bolivia and Peru). In adulthood, its size varies from 20 to 35 cm and its longevity is around 15 years.
Handling
The chinchilla is the softest animal in the world! It has the second densest fur (20,000 hairs/cm2), so petting a chinchilla is a very enjoyable experience for all ages. This animal is not very comfortable being picked up so the handling is done in a large bowl and sometimes it sticks its head out, which makes it even cuter. It's possible to take the bowl with you and pet it.
A partnership with Environment Canada allows us to hold unique items seized at customs that come from poaching (ivory tusks, python skin, furs, sea turtle shells, etc.).
These pieces are used in some of our animations in order to sensitize the public to behave responsibly when consuming animal products. We also teach them the importance of wildlife conservation and the repercussions of poaching on animal populations.
