When Birds Awaken Well-being and Awareness

On April 17, 2025, Joanie Asselin, biologist and president of Éducazoo, joined a passionate panel of experts on the radio show Les idées folles on ICI Radio-Canada animated by Paul Journet and Rose-Aimée Automne T. Morin. Together, they explored the profound influence birds have on our well-being, intelligence, and connection to the natural world.

Around the table: Pierre Verville shared how birdwatching supports his mental health, Rafaële Germain spoke about how birds give her a much-needed sense of pause, Catherine Ethier read a heartfelt literary tribute to our feathered friends, and Professor Louis Lefebvre explained how birds help scientists understand the evolution of human intelligence. Joanie highlighted the therapeutic role birds can play in educational and zootherapy settings. With their calming presence and fascinating behavior, birds help soothe, stimulate, and create deep emotional connections in both children and adults.

Joanie also took the opportunity to raise awareness about the specific needs of avian species. Each year at Easter, Éducazoo includes chicks and ducklings in its ambassador animal selection to educate families and discourage the idea of keeping these animals as seasonal gifts or indoor pets. These birds require proper living conditions, and their welfare must come first.

This thoughtful and engaging segment emphasized the importance of being more attentive and respectful toward our avian communities.
